Sustainable Development Goals Hackathon - SMART CITIES

04-26/28 Klaipėda

Why HACK FOR WORLD?

In 2015 the United Nations adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, meant to tackle the world’s most pressing problems such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. Solutions are set out in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which countries pledged to implement by the year 2030. Given the impressive information and communications technologies (ICT) sector advancement in Lithuania, and the ICT student body being largely comprised of talented young minds,

AfriKo organises Hackathons for Sustainable Development Goals, the first of its kind in Lithuania. With ICT4D (ICT for Development) as a starting point, the Hackathon – under the banner “Hack for World” – brings together ICT and sustainable development, where one works for the other for the betterment of both. Believing that modern technologies allow for a more efficient way to deal with certain global challenges, the Hackathon invites students to create innovative solutions for problems addressed by the SDGs.

About Smart Cities hackathon

This time we will focus on challenges related to urban environment, especially in African countries. Smart Cities Hackathon promises to be truly international. Around 50 expected participants – both local and international students – will be guided by a highly experienced team of mentors with expertise in sustainable urban development and smart cities from different corners of the world.

Mentors will assist students in formulating concepts and developing ideas, business models, and products.

Smart Cities Hackathon is organised in partnership with iamus, an international software company with offices in Singapore, Munich, and Klaipėda. iamus provides innovative solutions that enable customers to manage and optimise their environments to improve quality of life and reduce environmental impact and energy costs.

About

Challenge

Hackathon will be looking for tech-driven solutions to advance the SDGs with a particular focus on SDG 11: make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Specifically, we will be looking for new ideas to enhance basic service delivery, sustainable transport, energy, waste management, adequate and affordable housing and citizen engagement in cities globally (with a focus on such emerging regions as Africa, though solutions could be applicable in Lithuania’s context too).

Specific challenges will be defined by our partner organizations (iamus, Global Shapers Community – Vilnius Hub and MANDU | architecture & urbanism) and will be made available for registered participants.
